All About Hastings

History of Hastings

It is perhaps from its regal namesake that Hastings developed its strength and ability for growth and development. From humble beginnings in the mid 1800’s, when a few huts dotted the banks of Kings Creek (the Kings were the first land owners in the region), to the successful commercial hub that it is today.

Whether the town was named after the Marquis of Hasting or the fishing village Hastings in England is unknown, but they are two equally romantic possibilities for the birth of its name!

Wattle bark stripping, hunting and fishing provided income for the small population, but with the construction of the jetty in 1865, followed closely by the railway, commercial fruit growing and fishing provided a robust economy for the town.

Today the deep waters of Western Port Bay provide unrivalled commercial shipping access which has allowed Hastings to host several major industrial operations including BlueScope Steel and ESSO.

The jetty still stands as a testament to Hastings’ historical seafaring origins and its sea related success today.
